The Modern Flames Redstone is the traditional-style electric fireplace that plugs into a wall outlet: a tall vertical firebox with driftwood logs on acrylic crystals, Hybrid-FX flames in ten colors, and a 5,000 BTU heater with a thermostat. It slides into a retired zero-clearance or masonry fireplace, with a surround kit to cover the old opening, or goes into a new wall as a built-in with 10 to 12 inches of depth. Five sizes from 26 to 54 inches. For the LCD screen and lit logs in the same shape, see the Orion V2 Traditional; the Redstone is the LED fireplace at about half the price.
- Sizes: 26, 30, 36, 42 and 54 inch.
- Installs: slide-in insert into an existing fireplace (with a surround on the 26, 30 and 36), or built-in flush mount in a wall. Indoor only.
- Power: plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet; hardwire possible.
- Heat: 5,000 BTU, variable, with a thermostat, for a room up to about 400 sq ft.
- Lighting: Hybrid-FX flame, 10 colors, with flame, ember bed and downlight set separately.
- Media: driftwood log set and acrylic crystals. TruWood Premium Timber optional.
- Trim: 5/8-inch standard trim; surround kits for existing openings.
- Made by: Modern Flames, Phoenix, Arizona.
Who it's for
Right buyer. You have an old wood fireplace you want to retire and fill with something that plugs in, or you want a traditional-shaped electric fireplace at the lowest price with a surround to cover the old opening. Ten flame colors, a thermostat and a remote are enough for you.
Wrong buyer. You want the flame to fool a guest at close range or lit real-wood logs, speakers and an app; that is the Orion V2 Traditional in the same shape. You want to heat a large room; 5,000 BTU is supplemental.
Will it fit?
Whether it goes into a framed wall or the firebox of an old fireplace, the opening must be at least the size below, measured inside, with depth from the finished face. Put the outlet inside the opening or run a circuit for hardwiring.
| Size | Width | Height | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26" | 23" | 18‑3/4" | 10" |
| 30" | 28‑1/4" | 18‑3/4" | 10" |
| 36" | 32‑5/8" | 23‑7/8" | 10" |
| 42" | 38‑3/4" | 26‑3/4" | 10" |
| 54" | 50‑15/16" | 32‑3/4" | 12" |
Covering an existing opening
An old fireplace opening is usually bigger than the Redstone. The surround kits close the gap: each covers a range of opening sizes, the small kit for openings just larger than the fireplace and the large kit for the rest. A 7-inch top piece (TKP-RS36-7, $75) raises the small 36-inch surround to 30-1/2 inches; ask us if you need it.
| Size | Surround | Part | Trim width | Covers openings from, to | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 26" | Small Surround | TK-RS26‑3324 | 5 in | 32‑3/4 wide x 23‑1/4 high to 32‑3/4 wide x 27‑5/8 high | $175 |
| 26" | Large Surround | TK-RS26‑3726 | 7 in | 36‑3/4 wide x 25‑1/4 high to 36‑3/4 wide x 31‑5/8 high | $250 |
| 30" | Small Surround | TK-RS30‑3824 | 5 in | 38 wide x 23‑1/4 high to 38 wide x 27‑5/8 high | $175 |
| 30" | Large Surround | TK-RS30‑4427 | 8 in | 44 wide x 26‑1/4 high to 44 wide x 33‑5/8 high | $250 |
| 36" | Small Surround | TK-RS36‑4128 | 4 in | 40‑1/2 wide x 27‑3/8 high to 40‑1/2 wide x 30‑3/4 high | $175 |
| 36" | Large Surround | TK-RS36‑4530 | 6 in | 44‑1/2 wide x 29‑3/8 high to 44‑1/2 wide x 34‑3/4 high | $250 |
The 42 and 54 inch have no surround; they are built-in and flush-mount only.
Clearances
| Clearance | Minimum |

| Sides, top and back, to wood framing | 0" (the fireplace is designed to be framed in wood) |
| Floor | 0"; no hearth required |
Heat and power
The Redstone plugs into a 120-volt outlet, drawing 1,465 watts with the heater on, so give it a circuit of its own. The heater gives up to 5,000 BTU, enough to take the chill off a room of about 400 square feet, with variable output and a thermostat. The flames run with or without heat, on a fraction of the power.

Installation
Plug-in on a 120-volt circuit of its own; it draws about 1,465 watts with the heater on.
- Retrofit into an old fireplace: retire the fireplace (gas capped, damper sealed), slide the Redstone into the firebox, plug in, fit the surround over the opening.
- Built-in: frame the opening from the table above with 10 to 12 inches of depth, outlet inside, finish the wall to the trim.
What arrives
- The fireplace with front glass, standard trim, driftwood log set, acrylic crystal media, remote and hardware, with a 120-volt plug.
- The surround kit and the TruWood logs ship as their own cartons when you add them.
Before you order
- Indoor use only. Not for bathrooms, laundry rooms or anywhere it can get wet.
- Plug it into its own circuit. Never use an extension cord or power strip.
- Keep curtains, furniture and bedding at least 3 feet from the front. The heater blows out of the top front.
- It is a supplemental heater for one room, not a home's main heat.
- The front is glass. Large sizes take two people to lift and to remove the glass.
- Retrofits: the old fireplace must be shut down properly, gas capped and the damper closed or sealed. A chimney sweep or gas fitter does this in an hour.
- Built-in installs: frame the opening from the table above, run the electrical to the top right of the framing, and double-check the fireplace against the opening before cutting stone, tile or veneer.
How it performs
The Redstone is the fireplace that revives a dead wood fireplace for under a thousand dollars. Slide it in, plug it in, cover the old opening with a surround, and the room has a fire again the same afternoon. The flame is LED over glowing logs, good from across the room, ordinary up close, with ten colors and a thermostat. Built in, it does the same job in a new wall for a fraction of an Orion.
Trade-offs to know
- An LED flame; the Orion V2 Traditional is the same shape with a screen, for about two and a half times the price.
- 5,000 BTU only, 120 volts only.
- The 42 and 54 inch have no surround; retrofits are the 26, 30 and 36.
Living with it
Nothing to maintain beyond a wipe of the glass. The remote and the front buttons cover every function. It draws about 1,465 watts with the heater on, so keep it on its own circuit and off extension cords.

Questions people ask
Redstone or Orion V2 Traditional?
Same shape and the same openings, so the choice is the fire. The Redstone is an LED flame effect over glowing logs, plugs in, and starts at $999. The Orion V2 draws its flames on an LCD screen with lit real-wood logs, speakers and an app, and starts at $2,499.
Can it go into my old wood fireplace?
Yes, once the fireplace is retired: gas capped, damper sealed, no more fires. Measure the firebox against the table above and pick the surround that covers the opening.
Can I run the flames without heat?
Yes. Heat and flame are separate controls.
Can I mount a TV above it?
The heat leaves at the top front; keep the vent clear and follow the TV maker's limits.
Can I return it?
Electric fireplaces are large, glass-fronted and shipped by freight. Measure the opening from the table above before you order, and contact us before returning anything.
How deep is the built-in opening?
10 inches for the 26 to 42 inch, 12 inches for the 54 inch, from the rough-opening table above.
What is the warranty?
Two years, limited.
Can I install it myself?
Yes, in an existing fireplace: slide it in and plug it in. A built-in needs the opening framed and an outlet inside it.
