Who it's for
Right buyer. You want a tall-opening wood-burning fireplace with an outside air kit and gas knockouts for a new build, in 36, 42 or 50 inch.
Wrong buyer. You want efficiency; the WarmMajic-II. You want a smaller, lower-priced fireplace; the Royalton.
Will it fit?

Heat and burn
An open wood fireplace is not a rated heater, and Majestic publishes no BTU figure for it: the fire warms what it faces by radiation, and most of the heat from the flue goes outdoors. What decides how much fire you get is the firebox: Biltmore 36 opens 59-3/4", Biltmore 42 opens 59-3/4", Biltmore 50 opens 71", Biltmore 36 opens 59-1/4, Biltmore 42 opens 59-1/4, Biltmore 50 opens 70-1/2, Sides opens 1", Front opens 7 ft, Adjacent wall opens 20", Floor opens BILT36, Biltmore 42 opens 42" x 28 1/2" opening, Biltmore 50 opens 50" x 3. Seasoned hardwood, a proper chimney draft and doors closed as the fire burns down give the most warmth for the wood. Where a gas log set is approved for the model, its rating is on the log-set page.
Choose your options
Refractory
The refractory is the brick lining of the firebox. Traditional is a running bond; herringbone sets the bricks on the diagonal. Both are the same material and price class; the choice is the look.

Doors close the opening when the fire is out or burning down, and cut the room air drawn up the chimney. Glass bi-fold doors show the fire closed; mesh doors are the screen alternative.

Chimney and installation
| Venting | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Type | Factory-built wood-burning fireplace chimney (per install manual) |
Chimney requirements, flue sizes and heights are in the install manual; not printed in this guide.
A factory-built wood fireplace is framed into the wall on a combustible floor with the clearances in its manual, and vented with the chimney pipe system listed for it, run inside a chase up through the roof. The pipe, supports, firestops and cap are sold separately and quoted from your installer's plan. Gas log sets and gas starters need the knockouts and a gas line run by an installer.
What arrives
- Steel Grate
- Dual gas knockouts
- Outside Air Kit
- Safety Firescreen
- Attic insulation shield
- UL/ULC Listed
- UL Listed
- The refractory, doors and any accessories ship as their own cartons.
Before you order
- Installation is by a qualified installer, and the fireplace and its chimney are inspected together.
- Framing, clearances, hearth extension and chimney height come from the installation manual for your size. Send us your plan and we will check it before anything ships.
- The chimney system is sold separately and priced from the plan.
- Burn seasoned firewood only. Check local rules on wood-burning appliances before you build.
- Special-order goods ship by freight. Confirm the size and refractory before you order.
How it performs
The Biltmore is the tall-opening version of the same idea, with an outside-air kit so the fire draws from outdoors instead of pulling warm room air up the chimney, and gas knockouts for a log set later. Open wood fires are for the look and the radiant warmth in front of them.
Trade-offs to know
- Not a heater; the WarmMajic-II is.
- Chimney system and its height are the manual's, and often the larger cost.
- Seasoned wood, yearly sweep.
Living with it
Ash out cold, grate in, sweep yearly; refractory panels are replaceable.

Questions people ask
Can I put gas logs in it?
Most Majestic wood fireplaces have gas knockouts and are listed for specific vented gas log sets; the options on this page are the ones Majestic approves for this model. A gas line and installation by a gas fitter are required.
Does it heat the room?
An open wood fireplace is for the look and the radiant warmth in front of it; most of the heat goes up the chimney. Doors help. For heating, look at the WarmMajic-II or a wood insert.
Which chimney pipe does it take?
The pipe system listed in the manual for this model, in the diameter and minimum height it specifies. We quote it from your installer's plan.
Can I return it?
Fireplaces are special-order freight items. Confirm the size, refractory and doors with us before you order, and contact us before returning anything.
What wood should I burn?
Seasoned hardwood, split and dried a year or more, below 20 percent moisture. Wet wood smokes, coats the chimney with creosote and makes a poor fire.
How often does the chimney need sweeping?
Once a year at least, and after every cord or two if you burn nightly. Creosote is the fire risk in any wood fireplace, and a sweep is cheap insurance.
Do I need the doors?
No, but they pay for themselves: closed, they stop room air going up the flue when the fire burns down, and they keep sparks in. Glass doors let you see the fire closed.
Can I add a blower later?
Where the model lists a fan or forced-air kit on this page, yes; it fits into the cabinet without rebuilding. Models without a listed kit are radiant only.
