Description

The Osburn 2500 Pellet Stove is an EPA certified pellet stove for 500 to 2,000 sq ft. It burns up to 51 hours on a load.

Who it's for

Right buyer. Owners of moderately to well-insulated homes between roughly 800 and 1,800 sq ft who want a freestanding wood-pellet heating appliance with the convenience of automatic ignition, thermostatic control, and 24+ hour unattended burn cycles — not the hands-on operation of a wood stove.

The Osburn 2500's 0.96 g/hr particulate emissions is well below the EPA pellet stove limit of 2.0 g/hr and roughly 1/3 the emissions of the larger Osburn 3000 (2.9 g/hr). For buyers in EPA non-attainment counties or HOA-restricted neighborhoods, this matters.

How it performs

The 39,260 BTU/hr maximum is a heat input rating based on the peak burn rate of 4.7 lb/hr and a dry pellet energy value of 8,600 BTU/lb. Heat output to the room is lower than heat input — the realistic operating band is 6,648–28,540 BTU/hr per the CSA B415.1-10 stack-loss method.

Good to know

  • Single SKU, no buyer choices at order. The Osburn 2500 ships as one configuration. No faceplate options, no door overlay choices, no louver styles.
  • Top-feed combustion is pellet-quality sensitive.
  • Pellet stoves need electricity to operate. The auger motor, combustion blower, exhaust blower, and electronic igniter all require 120 V AC.

Where it can go

The Osburn 2500 is designed for installation in a permitted residential space — a living room, family room, basement, finished workshop, manufactured home, or mobile home with adequate electrical service and a vent path to the exterior. Approved for both alcove and mobile-home installations in the US and Canada per the manufacturer listing — uncommon dual approval that opens installation locations many other solid-fuel appliances can't serve.

Clearances to combustibles

Floor protection

A non-combustible floor protector is required under and around the appliance unless the existing floor is already non-combustible (concrete, slate, etc.). In Canada, the floor protector must extend at least 18 inches in front of the door opening and at least 8 inches at the back and on each side of the appliance. In the US, the floor protector must extend at least 6 inches in front of the door opening and extend at least 6 inches beyond each side of the door opening. Minimum thickness 0.015 inches (0.38 mm). The manufacturer offers pre-sized options including the Black Steel Hearth Pad in 41 1/4" × 44" (AC02709B), 46 3/4" × 54" (AC02788), and 54" corner (AC02789); tempered glass options (AC02704, AC02757); and the modular floor protection system 54" × 46 3/4" (AC02711) for buyers wanting a coordinated finished look.

Clearances

Tight clearances compared to wood-burning freestanding stoves — a function of cool pellet exhaust and contained combustion. The certification label on the unit is the binding clearance for any installation and always overrides clearance figures published in any other media. Confirm the binding clearance figures with your installer before purchase.

Warranty

A one-time replacement limit applies to all parts with lifetime coverage. Warranty is void if the unit is used to burn anything other than premium-grade wood pellets, or if it is not operated according to the owner's manual. Damage caused by misuse, improper installation, lack of maintenance, fuel quality issues, power surges, downdrafts, or venting problems is not covered. Improper installation by anyone other than an authorized qualified technician voids the warranty.

Warranty claims are made through your Osburn dealer and remain subject to SBI/Osburn inspection, approval, and the current written warranty. Kaminos is the retailer for this stove and supports buyers through purchase; final warranty approval rests with SBI as the manufacturer. SBI's parts network is well-stocked — replacement augers, blowers, igniters, gaskets, glass, control boards, and venting components are openly available at fair prices through multiple parts vendors.

Osburn may require photos or returned parts to support a claim; repair work covered by warranty requires prior manufacturer approval.

Coverage details can change by component and warranty revision; the current Osburn warranty controls.

Heat

From the specification sheet
Spec Value
Heating area 500 to 2,000 sq ft
Maximum heat output 39,260 BTU/h input
Heat output range 6,648 to 28,540 BTU/h
Efficiency 70.3% HHV, 75.8% LHV average; 78.4% optimum
Burn time 51 h
Emissions 0.96 g/h
Burn rate 1.2 to 4.7 lb/h
Spec Value What it means
Combustion technology Top-feed Pellets feed into the burn pot from above via an auger. Top-feed combustion is simpler and quieter than bottom-feed but more sensitive to pellet quality — high-ash or low-grade pellets can crust the burn pot and require more frequent cleaning. For premium-grade pellets, top-feed runs reliably. For higher-ash pellets, consider the bottom-feed Osburn 3000.
Heating range 500–2,000 sq ft Manufacturer's stated range. Real-world comfort sizing for primary heat is roughly 800–1,800 sq ft in moderate climates and lower in cold climates or older homes — depends on insulation, layout, climate, ceiling height, pellet quality, and installation.
Maximum heat input rate 39,260 BTU/hr Maximum fuel energy input at peak burn rate (4.7 lb/hr). Heat output to the room is lower than heat input — see tested output range below for the realistic operating band.
Tested heat output 6,648–28,540 BTU/hr Per CSA B415.1‑10 stack-loss method. The realistic operating band buyers should plan around. The thermostatic control cycles the stove between low and high output to match heat demand from the room.
Average efficiency 70.3% HHV / 75.8% LHV 78.4% LHV optimum efficiency at the specific burn rate; 73% HHV optimum heat-transfer efficiency. Higher than most wood-burning appliances at comparable output because pellet combustion runs cleaner and more controlled. HHV is the federal standard.
Particulate emissions 0.96 g/hr Tested at 0.96 g/hr per CSA B415.1‑10 by an independent accredited laboratory — well below the EPA pellet stove limit of 2.0 g/hr and among the cleanest-burning pellet stoves in its category. Roughly 1/3 the emissions of the larger Osburn 3000 (2.9 g/hr).
Average CO emissions 7.6 g/hr Average carbon monoxide emissions per CSA B415.1‑10 stack-loss method. Substantially lower than wood-burning appliances at comparable output (typically 60–160 g/hr) — a structural advantage of pellet combustion's controlled fuel/air ratio.
Maximum burn time Up to 51 hours From a full 60-lb hopper at the lowest burn rate (1.2 lb/hr) per manufacturer spec. Useful continuous operation. At high burn rate (4.7 lb/hr) the same hopper lasts approximately 12 hours.
Burn rate 1.2–4.7 lb/hr Pellet consumption rate range across all six heat settings. At 4 lb/hr in active heating use, a 40-lb bag burns in roughly 10 hours; a ton of pellets (40 bags) lasts roughly 400 hours of continuous operation, or about three months at typical residential cycling.
Combustion noise 47–60 dBa at 6 ft Manufacturer-published noise level range at 6 feet from the appliance. Quieter end is low burn / low convection; louder end is high burn with maximum convection blower speed. Audible but not loud — comparable to a quiet conversation or a soft kitchen exhaust fan. Some owner reviews flag the blower as noisy at higher settings.

Installation

Chimney requirements from the specification sheet

Requirement Value
Flue pellet vent

Outside air

A fresh-air intake is not mandatory in all installations but is required for mobile-home installations and strongly recommended for tight new-construction homes with mechanical ventilation, for homes with powerful range hoods or other mechanical exhaust appliances, and where local code requires it. The 3" × 10' insulated flex pipe (SBI AC02092) and 3" × 5' fresh air intake kit (SBI AC01240) are sold separately for buyers configuring outside-air installations.

Codes and approvals

Code compliance for any specific installation is determined by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction. Manufacturer listings cover what the stove is approved for; the AHJ approves what is permitted at your address. A WETT (Canada), NFI, or CSIA (USA) certified installer is strongly recommended and frequently required by code, permit, or insurance.

California Proposition 65

This product can expose you to chemicals including carbon monoxide, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65warnings.ca.gov.

Planning the install

  • Check with your building department and insurer: wood appliances need a permit in most places and an inspection after installation.
  • The chimney is the other half of the system. It is sold separately and quoted from your installer's plan.
  • Clearances and floor protection come from the manual and depend on the pipe and shields you choose. Send us your plan and we will check it.
  • Use premium pellets; poor pellets are the cause of most complaints about any pellet stove.
  • Special-order goods ship by freight.

Questions
How does it compare with the other Osburn models?

Harman P43 Premium cross-brand pellet stove from Harman (Hearth & Home Technologies, USA). 1,500 sq ft maximum heating area, 41,180 BTU/hr maximum, 46 lb hopper, 28-hour maximum burn at low setting, 84% efficiency claim, 1.6 g/hr particulate emissions, push-button electronic ignition, integrated thermostatic control, Harman ESP (auto-feed) technology. Significantly lower purchase price than the Osburn 2500 — typically half the cost.

Choose the Castle Serenity for the lower entry price, smaller compact footprint, and basic pellet-heating functionality; choose the Osburn 2500 for substantially lower emissions, longer burn time, larger hopper, larger glass viewing area, alcove and mobile-home approvals (Castle Serenity is not alcove-approved), heavier-gauge construction, and SBI's parts and dealer network. Englander 25-PDVC Workhorse cross-brand pellet stove from Englander (US Stove Company, USA). 2,000 sq ft maximum heating area, 40,000 BTU/hr maximum, 40 lb hopper, manually-adjusted feed rates (no thermostatic auto-cycling), 86% efficiency claim, 1.9 g/hr particulate emissions, top-feed combustion, 250 lb shipping weight.

Long-standing budget-friendly pellet stove with a strong reputation for reliability and parts availability through Home Depot and similar retailers. Choose the Englander 25-PDVC for the established budget-friendly track record and parts availability through big-box retail; choose the Osburn 2500 for thermostatic control with the optional digital wall thermostat, substantially lower emissions (0.96 g/hr vs 1.9 g/hr), longer burn time, larger hopper, alcove and mobile-home approvals, and SBI dealer support.

How is it vented?

Through a 3-inch or 4-inch pellet vent out a wall or up through the roof, with an outside air connection. The vent kit is quoted from your installer's plan.

Does it need electricity?

Yes. The auger, igniter and blowers run on 120 volts. A battery backup is worth having where outages are common.

Can I install it myself?

Many owners do the placement and the pipe with the manual in hand, but the chimney, the permit and the inspection are where an installer earns the fee. Insurance usually requires the inspection.

Can I return it?

Stoves ship by freight. Confirm the model and the options with us before you order, and contact us before returning anything.

What wood should I burn?

Seasoned hardwood, split and dried a year or more, below 20 percent moisture. Wet wood smokes, coats the chimney with creosote and makes a poor fire.
