Who it's for
Right buyer. You have a wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney and a gas line and want the look of a wood fire without the work, from a match, a knob or a remote, with a Majestic burner sized to the firebox and the log style you like.
Wrong buyer. You want the fireplace to heat the room; vented logs send most of the heat up the chimney. Your fireplace is a direct-vent gas unit or a vent-free firebox; these burners cannot go in it.
Will it fit?
Vented gas logs go into a wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney and a gas line. Measure the inside of the firebox: width at the front and back, depth and height. The burner size is the log length, and the firebox must be several inches wider and deeper than the burner; the exact minimums are in the burner's installation manual. Send us the numbers and we will check them before the order ships. Outdoor burners are built with stainless components for an outdoor wood-burning fireplace only.
Minimum firebox for each burner
Measure the inside of the firebox: the width at the front, the depth, the width at the back and the height. Each burner needs at least the room below, from the manual's minimum hearth dimensions.
| Burner | Front width | Depth | Rear width | Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OD-STM18-N | 28" | 14" | 16" | 16" |
| OD-STM24-N | 34" | 16" | 18" | 18" |
The OD-STSP safety-pilot burners share the OD-STM tube; the OD-STM minimums are the ones to measure against.
Clearances
An outdoor burner goes only in an outdoor wood-burning fireplace, in the open air, with the fireplace's own clearances unchanged. The burner needs the firebox room below, the damper fixed open if the fireplace has one, and 3 feet of clear space in front.
Firebox room for the burner. Majestic sizes each burner to a firebox width: the 18-inch burners need a firebox wider than 18 inches at the back, the 24-inch wider than 24, the 30-inch wider than 30, with the flame kept off the walls and the front of the burner behind the hearth line. The exact minimums are in the installation manual linked below, and we check every order against them; send the firebox width at the front and at the back, the depth and the height.
Heat and gas
Maximum heat input per hour, from the burner manual. A vented burner is tested as a decorative appliance or a supplemental heater; most of the heat goes up the chimney.
| Burner | BTU per hour, natural gas | BTU per hour, propane model | Burner weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| OD-STM18-N | 62,000 | not made in propane | 25 lb |
| OD-STM24-N | 69,000 | not made in propane | 27 lb |

Ignition
Match light burners have no valve of their own: you light them with a long match and set the flame with the fireplace's key valve. Safety pilot burners add a standing pilot and a valve at the burner, so the gas shuts off if the pilot goes out. Electronic (IPI) burners have no standing pilot; they light from the remote and include a battery-powered control. The burner part number tells you which one it is, and the table above prices each.
Installation
From the burner manual: the burner goes only in a solid-fuel masonry or UL 127 factory-built fireplace, on the grate, with the fireplace and chimney professionally cleaned first and any ash clean-out or fresh-air door sealed. The damper stop in the box must be fitted so the damper cannot close; the manual's Table 4.1 gives the minimum free damper opening by chimney height, and some burners are not allowed on a 10-foot chimney. Gas: a listed 1/2-inch T-handle shutoff and flexible connector to the 1/2-inch NPT inlet; natural gas 5.0 to 10.0 inches of water column at the inlet (3.5 manifold), propane 11.0 to 13.0 (10.0 manifold); above 2,000 feet the input is reduced 4 percent per 1,000 feet. Glass doors must be open when the burner runs. The appliance is tested as a supplemental heater or decorative appliance, not primary heat.

Before you order
- For wood-burning fireplaces only, with a chimney in good repair. The damper must be fixed open whenever the burner runs.
- Installation is by a licensed gas installer. Match-light burners are not allowed in some cities; check with your building department.
- Every burner is made for natural gas or propane. These pages are natural gas; add a note to your order for propane and we will confirm the LP burner before it ships.
- Once gas logs are installed, do not burn wood in the fireplace.
How it performs
A vented gas log set is the way to keep an open wood fireplace and stop hauling wood: the burner sits on the grate under ceramic logs, the damper stays open, and the fire lights from a match, a knob or a remote depending on the burner you choose. The flame is a real gas flame, yellow and moving, and it looks most like wood on the multi-tier burners that lift the fire up through the stack.
Trade-offs to know
- Vented logs are decorative: with the damper open, most of the heat goes up the chimney, and you feel radiant warmth in front of the fire.
- They go only in a wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney, never in a gas fireplace or a vent-free firebox.
- The burner must be sized to the firebox, and a match-light burner is not permitted in some cities.
Living with it
Brush the logs gently once a season and keep the burner ports clear; never wash the logs. Electronic burners take batteries in the control; keep a spare set. The damper clamp stays on for the life of the set.

Questions people ask
Do vented gas logs heat the room?
A little. They burn with the damper open, so most of the heat goes up the chimney; you feel radiant warmth in front of the fire. They are decorative appliances.
Can I use them in a gas fireplace or a vent-free firebox?
No. Only in a wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney.
Which log style should I choose?
Oak sets are the traditional look, birch the lighter one, and stacked sets a tidier modern pile. All are refractory ceramic and the same price class for a given size; choose by the look.
Can I return it?
Log sets are shipped by freight and matched to your fireplace. Confirm the size with us before you order, and contact us before returning anything.
Do I have to keep the damper open?
Yes, all the way, whenever the burner runs. Vented logs make the same combustion gases a wood fire does, and the manual requires a damper clamp so it cannot be closed by mistake.
Can I burn them with the glass doors closed?
No. Vented gas logs run with the doors open or removed; closed doors trap heat and starve the burner of air.
How much gas do they use?
The burner rating is on this page. A 24-inch burner around 65,000 BTU on high uses roughly 65 cubic feet of natural gas an hour, which is what a large furnace draws; run it on low for long evenings.
Will they discolor over time?
The ceramic logs char and darken a little where the flame touches them, which is normal and looks right. They do not burn away; a set lasts many years.
