Real Fyre Charred Mountain Birch Flame Enhanced is a vented gas log set for a wood-burning fireplace that has a natural gas line, packed with Peterson's Flame Enhancer. Birch bark with charred edges and burnt detail. In the same box as the logs you get a ceramic fiber back log that glows in the fire, an aluminized steel panel that fits behind the burner pan, and black embers. Peterson's claim for it is simple: more flame and more radiant warmth from the same gas. You choose the size that fits your firebox, the burner, and the way you want to turn it on.
This is a decorative fire. You will feel radiant warmth sitting in front of it, but the damper stays open and most of the heat leaves through the chimney. If heating the room is the goal, look at vent-free logs instead.
- Fuel: natural gas. Need propane? Add a note to your order and we will confirm the propane version with you before anything ships.
- Log sizes: 18, 24 and 30 inch.
- Burners: Real Fyre G4 or G45.
- Controls: match light, manual safety pilot, or remote.
- Flame Enhancer: included. It works only with the G4 and G45 burners, which is why those are the two offered here.
- Made by: R.H. Peterson Co. in City of Industry, California.
Who it's for
Right buyer. You have a wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney and a natural gas line, and you want the look of a real wood fire without hauling wood, from a match, a knob or a remote. The Charred Mountain Birch logs suit you if the description of them above is the fire you picture, and G4 or G45 give you the flame you want.
Wrong buyer. You want the fireplace to heat the room; vented logs send most of the heat up the chimney, and a vent-free set is the one for heat. Your fireplace is a direct-vent gas unit, a vent-free firebox or a stove; these logs cannot go in it.
Will it fit?
Measure the inside of the firebox, not the old logs and not the mantel opening. You need four numbers: width at the front, width at the back wall, depth from front to back, and height.
Your firebox must be at least as large as the row for the burner and size you want. Every size needs 17 inches of height. If you are within an inch of a minimum, order the next size down: a set that is too big disturbs the draft and overheats the valve.
Minimum firebox size with a control (manual pilot or any remote)
| Burner | Log size | Front | Back | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| G4 | 18" | 29" | 25" | 13" |
| G4 | 24" | 34" | 29" | 13" |
| G4 | 30" | 39" | 34" | 14" |
| G45 | 18" | 30" | 24" | 13" |
| G45 | 24" | 34" | 28" | 13" |
| G45 | 30" | 40" | 34" | 16" |
Electronic On/Off Remote needs more room for its battery and switch box. Add 2 inches to the front and back width on the G45.
Minimum firebox size with Match Light (no valve beside the burner)
| Burner | Log size | Front | Back | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| G4 | 18" | 24" | 18" | 13" |
| G4 | 24" | 28" | 23" | 13" |
| G4 | 30" | 34" | 27" | 14" |
| G45 | 18" | 24" | 18" | 13" |
| G45 | 24" | 28" | 23" | 13" |
| G45 | 30" | 34" | 27" | 14" |
The chimney must be at least 15 feet tall, and the firebox floor cannot have an ash lip or a sunken hearth deeper than 3/4 inch.
Peterson prints no separate firebox table for Flame Enhanced sets. The numbers above are for the burner you choose. If you are within an inch of a minimum, send us your measurements before you order.
Clearances
A vented gas log set borrows the fireplace's own clearances: the mantel, hearth and side-wall rules of the wood-burning fireplace it goes into stay exactly as they were built and inspected. What the log set adds is the room the burner and the flames need inside the firebox, below, and three rules: the damper fixed fully open with the clamp supplied, glass doors open or removed whenever the burner runs, and nothing stored or draped within 3 feet of the front of the fireplace.
Heat and gas
| Log size | G4 | G45 |
|---|---|---|
| 18" | 75,000 | 70,000 |
| 24" | 90,000 | 90,000 |
| 30" | 90,000 | 95,000 |
Figures are for burners with a control. G45 Match Light is rated slightly differently; the exact figure shows when you select it.
Choose your options
Burner
The burner sits under the logs. It decides how the flame looks, how much gas the fire uses and which controls you can have. The Charred Mountain Birch logs are the same on every burner.
G4 Glowing Ember
One burner pipe under the logs with a bed of glowing embers in front. The classic look at the lowest price, for sets up to 30 inch. It leaves the factory without a valve, so you either light it with a match or add a Real Fyre control kit that your installer fits to the burner.
G45 Triple-T
Adds a second burner across the front, so the embers glow brighter and the flames have more depth. With any control, sizes up to 36 inch arrive certified to ANSI Z21.60 with the valve already assembled and tested at the factory.
Control
Match Light. There is no valve on the burner. You hold a long lighter at the burner and open the gas with your fireplace's wall or floor key, which also sets the flame height. Natural gas only. Some cities require a safety pilot instead, so check with your installer or building department.
Manual Safety Pilot. A small pilot flame stays lit, and you turn a knob at the burner to light the logs. If the pilot ever goes out, the valve shuts off the gas. No batteries and no wiring.
On/Off Remote. A standing pilot plus a handheld remote that turns the fire on and off. It keeps working in a power outage. The remote and receiver run on batteries that come in the box.
Variable Remote. Everything the On/Off Remote does, and the remote also raises and lowers the flame.
Electronic On/Off Remote. No standing pilot. Press On and the system sparks its own pilot, then lights the burner, so you are not burning gas on a pilot all season. It runs on batteries that come in the box and needs a slightly wider firebox (see the fit tables).
| Control | G4 | G45 |
|---|---|---|
| Match Light | Yes | Yes |
| Manual Safety Pilot | Kit | Yes |
| On/Off Remote | Kit | Yes |
| Variable Remote | Kit | Yes |
| Electronic On/Off Remote | Kit | Yes |
"Yes" means the burner arrives with the valve assembled at the factory. "Kit" means the control ships as a separate Real Fyre kit for your installer to fit to the burner.
Installation
A vented set goes into a wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney and a gas line, by a licensed gas installer, in about two hours.
- Gas: a dedicated 1/2-inch line to a shutoff at the fireplace; natural gas at 5 to 7 inches of water column, propane at 11 to 13. The connector runs through a plate in the firebox floor or wall.
- Damper: fixed fully open with the clamp in the box. This is the rule that makes a vented set safe; the fire's exhaust goes up the chimney like a wood fire's.
- Doors: open or removed whenever the burner runs.
- Burner: set on the grate in the center of the firebox, the logs placed by the diagram in the box, embers scattered on the burner, sand or vermiculite in the pan for natural gas, lava rock for propane.
- Controls: a match-light burner uses the fireplace's key valve; a safety-pilot burner has its own valve and knob; an electronic burner takes batteries in the control box or a 110-volt outlet inside the firebox for the plug-in version, and the remote pairs once.
- Codes: match-light burners are not allowed in some cities; the installer knows which. Most jurisdictions want the inspection.
What arrives
- Log carton: the Charred Mountain Birch log set with its placement guide, plus the Flame Enhancer parts: ceramic fiber back log, aluminized steel panel and black embers. The ember screen packed with charred sets is used as well.
- Burner carton: burner, grate, glowing embers, sand for the burner pan, gas connector kit and damper clamp. Burners with a control also include the valve and regulator, already assembled. Remote versions include the handheld remote, receiver and batteries.
- Control kit carton: only with a G4 and a control.
Cartons can arrive on different days. Do not start the installation until everything is there.
Before you order
- For wood-burning fireplaces only, masonry or factory-built, with a working chimney. Not for vent-free fireboxes, direct-vent or B-vent gas fireplaces, or stoves.
- You need a natural gas line into the firebox, 1/2 inch inside diameter or larger, with a shut-off valve outside the firebox.
- The included clamp fixes the damper so it can never close completely. The damper must be fully open whenever the fire is on, glass doors fully open, and a screen in place.
- Installation is by a qualified gas professional. Have the chimney swept first and the set inspected once a year.
- Do not burn wood in the fireplace once the gas logs are installed, and do not leave the fire on unattended or while anyone is sleeping.
- In Massachusetts the installer must be a licensed plumber or gas fitter, and the damper has to be removed or fixed fully open.
- Above 2,000 feet elevation, add a note to your order. Peterson builds high-altitude versions.
How it performs
The Charred Mountain Birch Enhanced set is a vented gas fire in a wood-burning fireplace: the burner runs under and through the logs, the flames are tall and yellow and move like a wood fire's, and the embers glow under them. The look depends on the burner as much as the logs. On G4 Glowing Ember, G45 Triple-T, the flame comes up through the log stack in more than one place, which is what makes people stop and look twice. It lights from a match, a knob or a remote, and the damper stays open, so the room does not get the heat a wood fire never gave it either.
Trade-offs to know
- Vented logs are decorative: the damper is open and most of the heat goes up the chimney. For heat, the vent-free version of this style is the one.
- The logs never burn away, but they char and darken where the flame touches; that is part of the look.
- Gas use is real: a 24-inch burner on high draws about what a large furnace does. Low is for long evenings.
Living with it
Brush the logs and the embers gently once a season and never wash them; replace the embers when they stop glowing. Keep the damper clamp on for good. Electronic controls take batteries yearly. Have the burner and pilot checked when the chimney is swept.
What the Flame Enhancer does
The steel panel hooks onto the back of the burner pan and sits behind the grate, where it is packed with embers. The fiber back log rests against it in place of the standard back log, which stays in the box. Heat that would have been lost into the back wall is thrown forward, the flames stand taller, and the back log begins to glow about 15 minutes into a burn. On the first use, Peterson asks for at least an hour of burn time so the fiber log cures and glows properly. The gas input does not change.
The Flame Enhancer is not compatible with the outdoor stainless steel G45.

Questions people ask
What is the difference from the regular Charred Mountain Birch set?
The logs are the same. This set adds the Flame Enhancer: a glowing fiber back log, an aluminized steel panel behind the burner and black embers, packed in the same carton at one price.
Does it use more gas?
No. The burner and its rating are unchanged. The panel reflects heat forward and the fiber log glows, so you see more flame and feel more warmth from the same input.
I already own a Charred Mountain Birch set. Can I add the Flame Enhancer?
Yes. The Flame Enhancer Kit is sold on its own for G4 and G45 burners.
Do vented gas logs heat the room?
A little. Vented logs burn with the damper open, the way a wood fire does, so most of the heat goes up the chimney. You feel radiant warmth in front of the fire. Peterson certifies these sets as decorative appliances, not heaters.
Can I get it in propane?
Yes, by request. Everything on this page is natural gas. Add a note to your order and we will contact you to confirm the propane version before it ships. Propane always requires a safety pilot, so Match Light is not available in propane.
Can I use it in a vent-free or direct-vent fireplace?
No. It may only be installed in a wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney.
Do I need electricity at the fireplace?
No. The standing-pilot controls need no power at all, and the electronic controls and remotes run on batteries that come in the box.
Can I add a remote later?
Only by adding or replacing the valve. It costs less to choose a remote control now.
Can I still burn wood?
No. Once a gas log set is installed, the fireplace must not be used for wood.
