The Modern Flames Orion V2 Traditional is a virtual electric fireplace that draws its flames on a high-resolution LCD screen behind a real-wood log set, in the proportions of a classic wood-burning fireplace. It goes into a new wall as a built-in, slides into a finished opening, or replaces the firebox of an existing fireplace with a surround to cover the old opening. Five sizes, from 26 to 54 inches. The flames run with or without heat, and the heat comes from a quiet ceramic heater with a thermostat.
- Sizes: 26, 30, 36, 42 and 54 inch.
- Installs: built-in clean face, self-trimming into a finished opening, or retrofit into an existing fireplace. Indoor only.
- Power: plugs into a 120-volt outlet on its own 20-amp circuit; hardwire ready. The 36, 42 and 54 inch can be wired for 240 volts for more heat.
- Heat: 5,000 BTU on 120 volts, up to 400 sq ft. 36 inch and up: 5,000 to 8,500 BTU on 240 volts, 400 to 700 sq ft.
- Flames: 24 options out of the box, lit real-wood logs, glowing ember bed, three crackling soundscapes, Bluetooth audio.
- Options: surround kits for the 26, 30 and 36 inch, and the TruWood Premium Timber log set.
- Warranty: 5 years. Made by Modern Flames, Phoenix, Arizona.
Who it's for
Right buyer. You want a fireplace that looks like a real one from across the room, in an existing masonry opening or a new wall, with no gas line and no chimney. You care about the flame more than the heat, and you like the idea of downloading new flame styles and streaming music through the same unit.
Wrong buyer. Your goal is heating a large space; 5,000 BTU on 120 V takes the chill off a room, no more. You need a fireplace for a bathroom or an unheated porch, or you would rather have the lowest price than the best screen, which is where the Redstone belongs.
Will it fit?
There are three ways to install it, and each has its own numbers. Measure the inside of the opening you have, or the opening you will frame, in width, height and depth from the finished face of the wall.
Built-in (new framing) and self-trimming (finished opening)
For a built-in clean-face install, frame the rough opening below and finish the wall to the fireplace's edge. For a self-trimming install, the finished opening is the same width and height, and the fireplace's own trim covers the edge; it needs half an inch less depth.
| Size | Width | Height | Depth, built-in | Depth, self-trimming |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 26" | 23" | 18‑3/4" | 10‑1/2" min | 10" min |
| 30" | 28‑1/4" | 18‑3/4" | 10‑1/2" min | 10" min |
| 36" | 32‑5/8" | 23‑7/8" | 10‑1/2" min | 10" min |
| 42" | 38‑3/4" | 26‑3/4" | 10‑1/2" min | 10" min |
| 54" | 50‑15/16" | 32‑3/4" | 10‑1/2" min | 10" min |
Into an existing fireplace
The fireplace slides into the firebox of a masonry or factory-built wood fireplace. The firebox must be at least as large as the rough opening above, and the gas or wood must be decommissioned. The surround kits below cover the gap between the fireplace and the old opening; each covers a range of opening sizes, and the small and large versions cover different ranges.
| Size | Surround | Part | Covers openings from, to | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 26" | Small 5 in | OTK-OR26-SM | 32‑3/4 wide x 23‑1/4 high to 32‑3/4 wide x 27 high | $175 |
| 26" | Large 7 in | OTK-OR26-LG | 36‑3/4 wide x 25‑1/4 high to 36‑3/4 wide x 31 high | $250 |
| 30" | Small 5 in | OTK-OR30-SM | 38 wide x 23‑1/4 high to 38 wide x 27 high | $175 |
| 30" | Large 8 in | OTK-OR30-LG | 44 wide x 26‑1/4 high to 44 wide x 33 high | $250 |
| 36" | Small 4 in | OTK-OR36-SM | 40‑1/2 wide x 27‑3/8 high to 40‑1/2 wide x 30 high | $175 |
| 36" | Large 6 in | OTK-OR36-LG | 44‑1/2 wide x 29‑3/8 high to 44‑1/2 wide x 34 high | $250 |
The 42 and 54 inch are built-in and self-trimming only; there is no surround for them. A 7-inch top piece (OTKP-OR36-7, $75) raises the small 36-inch surround to 30-1/2 inches high; ask us if you need it.

Heat and power
| Size | Heat | Power |
|---|---|---|
| 26" | 5,000 BTU (up to 400 sq ft) | 120V, plug included, hardwire ready |
| 30" | 5,000 BTU (up to 400 sq ft) | 120V, plug included, hardwire ready |
| 36" | 5,000‑8,500 BTU (400‑700 sq ft) | 120V/240V dual, plug included, hardwire ready |
| 42" | 5,000‑8,500 BTU (400‑700 sq ft) | 120V/240V dual, plug included, hardwire ready |
| 54" | 5,000‑8,500 BTU (400‑700 sq ft) | 120V/240V dual, plug included, hardwire ready |
Every size arrives with a 120-volt plug and gives 5,000 BTU on 120 volts, enough for a room of about 400 square feet. The 36, 42 and 54 inch have a second, 240-volt option: an electrician hardwires them to a dedicated 240-volt circuit with a neutral, and the heater output rises to as much as 8,500 BTU for rooms up to 700 square feet. Either way the fireplace needs its own 20-amp breaker.
Choose your options
Options
Surround
Only for a retrofit into an existing fireplace opening, and only on the 26, 30 and 36 inch. Choose None for a built-in or self-trimming install. The coverage table above tells you which size closes your opening.
Log set
Standard. The real-wood, internally lit log set that comes with every V2.
TruWood Premium Timber. Modern Flames' upgrade log set: larger pieces of real split wood, hand-charred, that drop in with no tools in place of the standard logs. It is the same kit sold on our TruWood page, matched here to your size.
Installation
Three ways in, all by a carpenter or a handy owner, with an electrician for a hardwire or a 240-volt circuit.
- Built-in clean face: frame the rough opening from the table above, run a dedicated 120-volt circuit to a box at the top of the opening (or 240 volts, four wires with a neutral, on the 36, 42 and 54 inch), slide the fireplace in, fasten through the nailing flanges, and finish the wall to the edge of the glass.
- Self-trimming: cut the finished opening, plug the fireplace into an outlet inside it, slide it in; its own trim covers the edge.
- Retrofit into an old fireplace: have the gas capped and the damper sealed, slide the fireplace into the firebox, plug it in, and fit the surround over the old opening.
The fireplace weighs enough that the 42 and 54 inch are a two-person lift, and the glass comes off for the carry.
What arrives
- The fireplace with its front glass, real-wood log set, glowing ember media, remote control and mounting hardware, with a 120-volt plug fitted.
- The surround kit and the TruWood log set ship as their own cartons when you add them.
Before you order
- Indoor use only. Not for bathrooms, laundry rooms or anywhere it can get wet.
- It needs its own dedicated 20-amp circuit. Nothing else on the breaker, and never an extension cord or power strip.
- Keep curtains, furniture and bedding at least 3 feet from the front. The heater blows out of the top front.
- It is a supplemental heater for one room, not a home's main heat.
- The front is glass. Large sizes take two people to lift and to remove the glass.
- Retrofits: the old fireplace must be shut down properly, gas capped and the damper closed or sealed. A chimney sweep or gas fitter does this in an hour.
- Built-in installs: frame the opening from the table above, run the electrical to the top right of the framing, and double-check the fireplace against the opening before cutting stone, tile or veneer.
How it performs
The Orion draws its fire on a screen, and the difference from an LED flame shows within a minute of switching it on: the flames have depth and shadow, they move differently every time, and they hold their realism at close range. On the V2 the log set is lit from inside, so the wood glows where a real fire would glow. Set the flame style and color once and it comes on the same way every evening from the remote or the app. Heat arrives a few minutes after the fan starts; on 120 volts it takes the chill off a 400-square-foot room rather than heating a house, and on 240 volts the 36 to 54 inch do noticeably more.
Trade-offs to know
- The screen is the whole point, so the fireplace is at its best in a room where you sit facing it. Seen from a sharp angle, an LCD loses some of its depth.
- It is an appliance with a computer in it: firmware updates and app pairing are part of ownership, which some people like and some do not.
- The retrofit sizes stop at 36 inches; a 42 or 54 inch needs a framed opening.
Living with it
Dust the glass and the log set a few times a year; nothing else needs attention. The heater is silent at low fan speed and audible at high. Flames without heat draw about as much as a light bulb, so leaving the fire on all evening costs little. In a power cut the fireplace is off; there is no battery mode.
What is new in Orion V2
Modern Flames introduced the Orion in 2022 as the first electric fireplace to draw its flames on an LCD screen instead of projecting them onto a mirror. V2 is the second generation, released in 2026.
- A better screen. Next-generation LCD with deeper blacks and sharper contrast, and adaptive brightness that adjusts the flame to the light in the room.
- 24 flames out of the box. Three flagship multi-dimensional flame styles in six colors each, plus a fourth slot for themes you download in the Modern Flames+ app. The library keeps growing, and the fireplace stores six at a time.
- Real wood logs. The log set is cut from real split wood. On the Traditional and Multi the logs are lit from inside; on every model the ember bed glows and moves under brighter downlights.
- Sound. Custom speakers with three crackling soundscapes, and Bluetooth streaming for music.
- Heat. A PTC ceramic heater with a thermostat, fan-only mode and a lockout so the flames can run without heat.
- Controls. A remote, a touch panel on the fireplace, and the app, which works with smart-home systems.
- 5-year warranty.

Questions people ask
Which install do I have?
New wall with studs: built-in clean face. A finished, drywalled or tiled opening already at the right size: self-trimming. An old wood or gas fireplace you want to replace: retrofit, with a surround if the opening is bigger than the fireplace.
Can it go in a real wood fireplace that still works?
Only after the fireplace is retired: gas capped, damper sealed, no more fires. It is an electric appliance and must not share the firebox with anything that burns.
Does it need 240 volts?
No. Every Orion V2 runs on a standard 120-volt circuit and gives 5,000 BTU of heat. The models marked dual voltage can be wired by an electrician for 240 volts instead, which raises the heat output. The flames are the same either way.
Can I run the flames without heat?
Yes. The heater has its own control and a lockout, so the fire runs all summer with no heat. The heater only runs while the flames are on.
Can I mount a TV above it?
The heat leaves through a vent at the top front, so check the TV maker's heat limits and keep the TV clear of the vent path. Many owners mount a TV above an Orion; the safest plan is to keep the vent unobstructed and follow the manual's clearances.
Does it make sound?
Only if you want it to. Three crackling soundscapes with three volume levels, or silence. V2 also streams music over Bluetooth through the same speakers.
How do the app and remote work?
The remote is in the box. The Modern Flames+ app on iOS or Android pairs over WiFi (2.4 GHz) and Bluetooth, adds schedules, a thermostat, custom color mixes and the downloadable flame library, and works with smart-home systems.
Can I return it?
Electric fireplaces are large, glass-fronted and shipped by freight. Please measure the opening from the tables above before you order. Contact us before returning anything so we can arrange it properly.
Which size fits an old fireplace?
The 26, 30 and 36 inch, with a surround. Measure the firebox against the rough-opening table; the surround must cover the old opening.
Is the log set real wood?
Yes. V2 log sets are cut from real split wood and lit from inside on the Traditional.
